The founder and director of the Pediatric Brain Injury Research Network is Dr. Kent P. Hymel. Dr. Hymel is a board certified Child Abuse Pediatrician and an Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine. He has directed medical child abuse evaluation programs at multiple U.S. academic medical centers. Dr. Hymel’s professional contributions have included service as the U. S. Air Force Medical Consultant for Child Abuse, the Deputy Medical Editor of the Subboard in Child Abuse Pediatrics of the American Board of Pediatrics, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, a faculty member of the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network at Penn State Univerisity, and President of the Ray E. Helfer Society—the primary sub-specialty society for physicians devoted to addressing the problem of child maltreatment. Dr. Hymel’s research has been funded by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Penn State University, Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, The Gerber Foundation, a private family foundation, and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
